Linking Timetabler to Building Management Systems to reduce CO2 and fuel costs

June 13, 2024 - realbranding

Empty rooms can cost a great deal to heat.

Academic institutions are being held to account over their green credentials as never before

Over the last few years, we have seen the proliferation of organisations dedicated to holding universities to account on green issues. Some even compile green league university rankings (eg: https://peopleandplanet.org/university-league).

Celcat Timetabler can help academic institutions achieve their green aims, particularly around fuel waste.

Celcat’s ethos has always been for the timetable to be a planned academic activity for the organisation which involves staff, students, and rooms (along with other resources). If the institution implements that plan so it drives what actually occurs, we can use the event data to drive the Building Management System (BMS).

A BMS is used to administer systems such as heating, lighting and  ventilation, with the aim of saving energy.

Celcat’s System Integration manager can use event data to switch these systems on and off as needed. Thus a lecture theatre can automatically be warm and lit ready for an event and, when it finishes, its heating and lighting turned off.

Benefits of using Timetable data to drive the BMS

  • Reduce carbon emissions
  • Reduce fuel costs
  • Ensure rooms are ready, enhancing learning environment
  • Improve staff and student satisfaction
  • Reduce FM duties
